As a fan of Woody Allen movies, I had to see his latest film on the same day of its release at the movie theater. So I decided to go there yesterday afternoon to avoid overcrowded rooms. Here is my review of Irrational Man that I found pretty good, enjoy!
Irrational Man is an American dark comedy directed by Woody Allen with Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, Parker Posey and Jamie Blackley. The film was released in France on October 14, 2015.
What’s the story? Abe Lucas is a Philosophy teacher devastated emotionally, who has lost all joy of living. He feels that whatever he undertook, political activism or education, was useless. Shortly after his arrival at the university of a small town, Abe gets involved in two love affairs. First with Rita Richards, a colleague who needs company and counts on him to make her forget her disastrous marriage. Then with Jill Pollard, his best student who also becomes his best friend. Jill loves her boyfriend Roy but she finds irresistible the tortured and whimsical temperament of Abe, not to mention his exotic past. And while his psychological disorders intensify, Jill is increasingly fascinated by Abe. But when she starts to show him her feelings, he rejects her. The most total coincidence upsets their fate when they hear the conversation of a stranger and share their views on the issue. After taking a crucial decision, Abe is able to fully enjoy life again. But this choice triggers a series of events that will mark him, Jill and Rita forever…
We know the taste of Woody Allen for cynism and controversy. He likes thumbing his nose at morality and finds a justification for the worst atrocities! This is what makes the charm of his films and Irrational Man brings us all the ingredients we need to have a good movie time.
Joaquin Phoenix did not hesitate to gain weight to have a pregnant belly and make more credible his character who drinks scotch like water. He is very convincing and remains classy despite his enormous belly and his neurotic attitude. His replicas are simply cultissime!
Emma Stone is the new muse of Woody Allen since the movie Magic in the Moonlight. The young actress is full of grace, freshness, enthusiasm and spirituality, we bet that Woody will make her play again in other films!
The issues that the movie highlights are the following: can a bad action help make the world better? What is the limit between good and evil? Can morality save someone unrecoverable?
Irrational Man is both a comedy, a romance, a thriller and a drama. The actors are excellent, light is beautiful and the story includes consistent twists. Go for it, it’s very entertaining!
